Project 3A:

What interests you about this project?
Being related to a subject that is included next semester, I look forward to get a head start on the physics experiment. It sounds like an experiment that would not be done in school and include mathematical aspects into it. It interests me because I believe that I can learn more about these subjects, which I have room for improvement, in an interesting way.

What do you want to learn by doing this project?
I hope to be able to understand the physics formula used and how the mathematical aspects are able to be incorporated into this experiment. I would also like to learn more about this experiment's practical application opportunities.

What questions do you have about this project?
What can this experiment's conclusion be used for?

What do you personally want to have achieved by the end of this project?
I hope it gives me a better understanding of Physics and Mathematics which I do not score very well in. I also hope to understand the practical application of this project, and most importantly, enjoy it while learning.

Project 3B:

What interests you about this project?
Caffeine is something that we consume a lot, in our tea and coffees, and I hope to understand its uses and characteristics more. It might provide the basic information and if any, warnings I need to know before I consume it. It is an experiment that we do not get to do at our level of education and is therefore, a rare chance. As a person who is interested in lab sessions and chemistry, this project interests me a lot, naturally.

What do you want to learn by doing this project?
I hope to grasp the fundamental knowledge of something that is always being consumed in our daily lives. I also wish to be able to have a better understanding in another branch of chemistry through this experience. Hopefully, the knowledge gained from this project can not only aid me in my daily life but can also give me a chance to do more complicated experiments beyond what normal secondary school education can offer, giving me a clue of what it will be like in the future.

What questions do you have about this project?
What is caffeine extraction used for?

What do you personally want to have achieved by the end of this project?
I hope to understand chemistry that will be learnt in the future better and the application of such chemistry in our daily lives. I wish to understand the science behind all the procedures of the experiment and identify the principles involved.

Reflections on Plenary Sessions

Key learnings from plenary session by Prof Kerry Sieh
From this session, I learnt more about the effects of earthquakes and a geologist’s career. They use unexpectedly innovative ways to predict and research natural disasters, like the coral reefs and vegetation locations. It gives a new perspective to geographical research. They were able to make use of the GPS as well. By using seemingly natural objects and occurrences in the environment, they can tell geographical happenings, past, present or future, beneath the Earth’s surface accurately. It is amazing how their research can save thousands of lives and is for a very noble reason.

Key understanding from plenary session by Prof Seah Hock Soon
From this session, I learnt how those fascinating animations are made. To my surprise, 3D animation, which is more modern and captivating, is less tedious than the traditional 2D animation. Looking at the process of 2D animation, I learnt more on how animations are beyond just technological graphics and stories. However, 3D animation is also unbelievably tough work in its own sense. The gears and technological work involved is extremely advanced, more so than 2D animation which is more labor-intensive. The creativity of such films, like Avatar, allows better special effects than merely creating everything literally, with minimal technology help. These technology helps to further emphasize on the expressions of the people despite the heavy effects and reduce the amount to trouble the actors have to go through.

Key Understanding from plenary session by Prof Ma Jan
From this session, I learnt how nano-technology and nano-science greatly impacts our world. From forensic science to medical science to defense technology, everything seems to be related to nano-science. It is impressive how scientists manage to work with organisms in the scale of nanometers and be able to solve great problems we face in society. Looking at the developing results, these research will improve the standards of living worldwide in most aspects. Learning what nano-science is capable of achieving, some changes and technological break throughs are no longer just amazing miracles.

2. New questions about the topics.
  1. How can other natural disasters be researched and predicted in similar ways?
  2. How can 2D animation be further aided by technology?
  3. How can animation process by sped up yet maintain its various aspects and quality?
  4. How can nano-technology aid us in our daily lives?

Reflections on Applied Project Challenge: Your Accomplishments
  • Discuss how the project has deepened your understanding and broadened your awareness of the selected discipline.
  • What do you now understand about this discipline that you were unaware of at the beginning?
  • Describe how what you have learned from doing this project can be connected to what you are learning at school.
  • Describe how you can apply what you have learned from doing this project.
  •  At the end of the project, what new questions do you now have?
